July 2023

Captains Desk

From your Club Captain, Men's Captain and Women's Captain...

With the busiest part of our event season upon us, a reminder for members that registration for the Darwin Open closes on 25 July 2023 and NT Classic closes on 16 August 2023. For the Darwin Open, if the greens are still showing extensive damage from the rare disease, as detailed in our Course Superintendent's reports over the past few months, we will introduce a temporary local rule for these areas to be deemed an abnormal course condition where a player may take free relief. If introduced, this will only be for the period of the Darwin Open and participants will see the rule wording on the rules handout when you check in on day one.

It is important that members read the Irrigation Update email that was sent out to members on 10 July 2023. These emails contain important information about the temporary courses, course navigation, safety on the course and rules information. A reminder that holes 6 & 7 are currently closed and are No Play Zones. If you play a ball from a No Play Zone (NPZ) you receive the General Penalty (2 strokes) - look for the black stakes with green ribbon which identify the NPZ area and take your compulsory free relief. It is also important that when you finish hole 5 you follow the red arrows through holes 6 & 7 to get to hole 8 - do not double back down holes 4 & 5.

Congratulations to all the winners from our Airnorth Club Championships in June, and to everyone else that participated in the full-field 2 weekends of golf. Presentation and prizes for this event will be awarded at our Closing Reception & Presentation Night on Saturday 28 October 2023. Below is a list of the overall champions for each category:

One that we don't have a photo for but would like to acknowledge is for long term member Norm Watson. Norm had a great round on 15 June 2023 with a gross score of 82... which represents his age. How fantastic is that!

Darwin Open 2023

Superintendents Course Report

A very busy month with it all happening, Club champs have been run and won over two weekends with great playing conditions, congratulations to all winners in all grades. Irrigation is up in 4/5 manually only, which at the moment is very time consuming as I can only run say 3 valves at a time for pressure and water distribution. I'm in at 5am to beat the golfers as much as possible, so please be patient if there are a few sprinklers on at any given time, I water greens and tees early so to not inhibit golfers putting or teeing off.

Following Sundays last round of the clubbies we had a month before the Darwin open so we went in with needle solid tines, verticut (dethatch) and then dusted (a light sanding) this keeps the putting surface firm encourages deep roots and a true putting surface, a carbon based fertiliser applied and a wetting agent also. I can now back off the heavy watering's and gain some green speed for the upcoming major events, I was very happy with the roll and speed over the clubbies, so its plant health for now and bit more speed in the coming week.

I have finally had some success with the hybrid crows foot creeping into the putting surface with spot spraying with a herbicide called tribute, following up in 10 days knocked it over happy days. My focus now is to eradicate the nutgrass in fairways and surrounds, one spray has been applied a week ago and a follow up due now, as always crows foot up here is ongoing. Just received a new greens roller so that's 2 in the fleet also a new spray unit is on its way in the next week or so.

The old irrigation system is still a constant juggling act with areas too dry and some too wet and also incorporating the new into the old is a challenge, with cutting through existing pipe work getting the new work in and having it operable without losing turf but we will all benefit down the track.

Greens recovery is coming along after the rare ERI disease and has a healthy 200 mm white root system after root stimulant program, as seen in photos below.

Happy golfing!

Identify Golf Ball

Rules Education

Lifting ball to identify it

If a ball might be a player's ball but it cannot be identified as it lies:

  • The player may lift the ball to identify it (including by rotating it), but:
  • The spot of the ball must first be marked, and the ball must not be cleaned more than needed to identify it (except on the putting green).

If the player lifts their ball under this Rule when not reasonably necessary to identify it, fails to mark the spot of the ball before lifting or rotating it or cleans it when not allowed, the player gets one penalty stroke in accordance with R&A Rule 7.3

You can mark your ball with an artificial object such as your tee or ball marker, and please mark it closer to the ball than what is demonstrated in the image above... it was the only free online image I could find!
