Norma Ridley

History and tradition is a big part of golf.

Whilst we do not necessarily play for the prize, it is always satisfying to see your name engraved on a trophy or cited on the Club’s Honour Board for posterity.

This month I was pleased to have received a message to meet a past Honour Board recipient who was back in town. Norma Ridley now 91 yrs moved to Queensland some decades ago but has family still in NT.

She wished to give back the Women’s Mayfair Cup which was first awarded in 1950 when Darwin Golf Club was located at East Point, Fannie Bay.

It was custom in that time for a player to keep the Cup if they had won it three times. Norma got to keep it in 1976. A Perpetual cup that is named after her was first presented in 1977 to Lyn Mounsey, another long standing Honour Board recipient. The Norma Ridley Cup is still going strong with Sue Gardiner our 2024 champion of the B Grade Club Championship!Both Cups will soon be on display in our newly designed Trophy Cabinet!

Darwin Golf Club junior Sophie Minchinton, 12 has won a scholarship from the Rotary Club of Darwin

She is also part of the Golf Australia Junior Emerging Talent programs in the NT.

As part of the scholarships, she will receive funding for a trip to Queensland in June-July to spend time working with the High Performance staff of GA and also to play in a top level state event.

Sophie Minchinton's golf journey began with junior golf clinics at Darwin Golf Club when she was 10. She began with a GA handicap of 37 but by the time she was 11, she had shaved it down to 23, and she was added to the JET program in January, 2024. She won the nett championship at the Katherine Open and handicap section of the Darwin Open.

Her handicap has plummeted to 13 and her aim is to reach 12 by Christmas this year and single figures in 2025. Ultimately, she has set a target of turning professional and reaching the LPGA Tour in the United States.

Congratulations to all of our Darwin Golf Club members that have won awards this year, these players have all excelled in both club and external competitions throughout the year.

Trivia Night:

Scott Murphy is rocking Trivia Night so round up the troops and join us from 6:30pm in the main clubroom. There are plenty of prizes to be won every Wednesday!! Bookings are advised, so call 08 8927 1322 to secure your table. The Jackpot is now at $1050 this week so be in it to win it!!!

Live music is every Friday from 6pm! This week is Lilla Wellington so come down and enjoy your Friday night with us.

Meat Raffle:

House & Social Committee are running meat raffles every Friday night. Thank you to Prime Meats NT & Grant De Ruyter for their generosity in supplying the club with meat vouchers.
