COVID 19 ADVICE – COMPETITION PLAY SUSPENDED
Overnight on Monday, the Chief Health Officer in the NT issued directions that prohibit people from organising or participating in a sporting activity that engages more than two people.
Additionally, the messaging from all Governments across Australia including the NT is very clear that people must stay at home unless undertaking one of four activities;
While DGC groupings in competitions and social play have been reduced to groups of two, the organised competition is a sporting activity which engages more than two people; it engages the entire field.
Handicapping and prizes associated with competitions provide an incentive to participate in the activity and encourage people to attend which, despite the essential social distancing measures we have in place, contravenes the key ‘stay at home’ message of Government.
Upon careful consideration of the direction and the implications for Darwin Golf Club the club, the Match Committee voted on Tuesday night to suspend all organized competitions. The suspension is in effect immediately and has been put in place for all of April at this stage.
This has been a very difficult decision for the committee. Consideration of the current operating environment reinforces that the intent of the Chief Health Officers direction is clear and there is no wriggle room in the interpretation.
The immediate suspension of competition play is now the best chance we have to continue golfing and to seize the earliest possible opportunity for recovery and a return to normal programming on the other side.
