A Word From The President

Dear Members,

With the humidity starting to rise, two weeks ago saw the staging of the last of our major events for the year, the Australian Vet’s Championships. The Club was buzzing from Sunday registration through to the final round’s completion on Friday, and I congratulate the organising team from our own NT Vet’s, that did an amazing job in delivering a great tournament and experience for interstate visitors. To top the week off, congratulations to DGC’s own John Robins who was crowned Australian Veterans Men’s Champion, finishing eight shots clear of second, with six other members winning or finishing runner-up in other overall divisions.

With our last major event behind us, works have, and will continue on, the course prior to the onset of the wet season. In the last week tree works have commenced under the guidance of arborists to ‘uplift’ and tidy trees around the course, including between the 1st green and 2nd tee, the 11th green and 12th tee, the right-hand side of the 12th tees, and adjacent the 10th Ladies tee. Following discussion on options to address root intrusion, the large tree behind the Men’s 7th tee has also been removed to prevent further damage to the tee block. Tree planting will follow in this area prior to the wet season, and the Greens Committee are currently working to produce a strategy for planting in other areas of the course. Works to complete the 16th and 17th tees will also recommence in the coming days to complete earthworks and resurfacing in these areas. By now many members will have noticed the new entry and clubhouse surrounds signage, renewing many of the older, faded signs and giving the area a facelift. New fencing and gates have also been installed at the golf entrance to improve the arrival experience.

Saturday the 27th of September will see our annual Grand Final Day kick off with a shotgun start at 8:30am. The event has been revamped, with new sponsor Programmed Turnpoint, and will be a four-person novelty ambrose format with some specific and fun challenges on certain holes (can’t say more than that). The timesheet is live now and it will be a great day with a few surprises, and the footy on the big screen afterwards, so we are looking for a big turnout.

Have a great month of golf while the weather is still bearable, and I look forward to seeing you around the club.

Simon Gardini

General Manager's Report

The club wrapped up a very successful end to the corporate and charity golf day season, with four more events held in August. A big thank you goes out to all our staff and management for making these days such a success. We’re now delighted to hand Fridays back to our members to enjoy the course, and we sincerely thank you for your patience and support during this busy period.

We’re pleased to share that the toilet block on Hole 15 has received a much-needed upgrade! New lighting has been installed, and all dispensers for toilet roll, hand soap, and hand towels have been replaced. These improvements are long overdue and will provide a cleaner, more comfortable experience for everyone using the facility.

A huge thank you to Wade and the team at Express Signs for organising all our new signage around the golf course and front entrance to the club. Your work has made a tremendous difference in creating a neat, tidy, and welcoming environment for our members and guests. We truly appreciate your professionalism and attention to detail!

Golf Camp

When students from Casuarina Street Primary School in Katherine set off on a three-hour drive to Darwin for their school camp, they expected adventure, new experiences, and plenty of fun.

What they might not have expected was to fall in love with a sport that for many of them was completely foreign, and their experience learning golf left them smiling from ear to ear.

As part of their week away, the Casuarina students were welcomed to Darwin Golf Club for a series of golf clinics delivered by PGA Professional Kurt Watts.

For many of the young participants, it was their first time picking up a golf club, and the sense of excitement was clear to see from the moment they stepped onto the practice area.

Watts guided the group through the fundamentals of the game - from learning how to hold the club and strike the ball, to practising putting and chipping.

He created a fun and supportive environment where students could challenge themselves, celebrate small wins, and most importantly, enjoy being active outdoors.

“The students absolutely loved it. For some of them it was a completely new experience, but they embraced it with so much enthusiasm. The laughter, teamwork, and sense of achievement really stood out,” Watts said.

While focussed on golf, the clinic also encouraged teamwork, patience, and confidence. As students cheered each other on and celebrated their progress, the sessions became a real highlight of the camp.

For Golf Australia, experiences like this highlight the role sport can play in connecting communities and creating opportunities for young people across the Northern Territory.

Whether in Katherine, Darwin, or beyond, golf is a game that can be enjoyed by everyone and a game for life.

Hi Members,

This month has seen the last of the gold letter events play with the Club Matchplay and the Men’s & Women’s foursomes and the Australian Vets Championship. I would like to congratulate Tod and the Turnpoint team on the presentation of the course for these events.

Now that the last of the major golf events have been played it is time to start thinking towards the next golf season. You will have seen the blue lines on the fairways which is where the fairways will be cut too. From there the plan is to have a distinguished 1st and 2nd cut of rough.

There is still some ongoing work to be done on the 16th and 17th to finish off around the new cart paths. This will involve the laying of turf and some additional earth works etc.

The irrigation system is now complete with the only item remaining being the 3rd party sign off. This will be complete in the coming months.

You may have noticed that the tree on the 7th has been removed. This was due to the tree root intrusion in the tee, the shading of the tee in the morning and the nuts being a safety hazard to the green staff. We have a plan for this area with the planting off new trees and now have the possibility to extend the hole.

We have also been trimming the trees around the course to remove over hanging and low hanging branches.

Lastly could I ask that all members remember to fill in their divots, repair their pitch marks on the greens and rake the bunkers once you have played out of them. A little bit of etiquette goes a long way and makes the course more enjoyable for everyone.

If you have any questions or concerns about the course, feel free to send me an email and I will respond in due course.

Happy golfing,

Simon Rogers

The first weekend of September saw the staging of the final gold letter event for 2025, the Club Championship Foursomes. In warmer conditions, there were two pairs that dominated the weekend. Congratulations to the Women's Champions Chris Ritchie and Sophie Minchinton, their overall gross score of 168 was 10 shots clear. They also clinched the nett title with a score of 149. The Men's Champions are Doug Core and Simon Chaplin who shot 73 & 78 for a total of 151, 4 shots clear of second place. They too also claimed the nett title, their score of 149 was 7 shots clear.

As we transition into the warmer months, the preparation and strategising that surrounds our Internal Pennants competition commences. The Match Committee have made the decision to split the conferences over the weekend to ease congestion on the course and increase pace of play. It has always been a hot topic and to provide context, comparing our typical competition booking sheet of 104 spots to internal pennants, where we are sending out 128 players, it is clear that moving the field will be challenging. There will be ramifications regarding wash outs and some other conditions of play which will be reviewed and the draw completed at our pre-season Captains meeting to be held on October 20.

Golf Australia have committed to the transition from Golf Link to Golf Connect, this is the system that manages our handicaps behind miClub and the miScore platforms. Whilst we do not expect that the transition will be visible to the membership, we can confirm that competitions will not be handicapped on Sunday September 28 and Thursday October 2. Please note that the competitions will run as normal, winners and balls down the line awarded consistent with any other weekend.

Finally we would like to welcome all members to our end of season celebration and presentation night on Friday October 25. Canapes will be provided with the intention of hosting a casual evening to congratulate our winners this year.

Michele Cody,

Women’s Captain

Leighton Schultz,

Men’s Captain
