A Word From The President

Dear Members,

Despite a little hiccup with some unexpected rain, what a beautiful month we have had for golf!

As the weather has improved, the DGC clubhouse team has located some tables and chairs back out onto our eastern lawn and it’s great to see members taking advantage of the open-air area in the evenings. To allow members to make the most of this area we will be increasing and upgrading the furniture and making other improvements, including umbrellas, festoon lighting and decorative fencing, over the next few weeks. This will also allow for the existing stage to be used for music and other entertainment on appropriate occasions.

The past week has seen the next stage of the Club’s mid- and long-term planning commence, with two days of master planning workshops facilitated by Golf Australia’s partner Mode Design. This process has taken the ideas generated during last year’s strategic planning member forums, as well as additional input from the workshops in the last few days and will be used to produce a draft DGC Master Plan for review by the Board, management and the wider membership. Once agreed and in place it will be intended to give the Club a direction that is embraced by members, facilitates effective and functional improvements, and avoids wasteful effort and spending on things that do not contribute to a successful future.

By now everyone will have seen the new cart paths from the 16th tee to the clubhouse and the extension from the 1st tee. Greg Cousen’s team also worked hard to salvage turf in these areas and re-lay it along the paths where possible to speed up the rehabilitation of the path surrounds. Follow up works are currently planned to include a widening of the back of the 16th tee in conjunction with rehabilitating the bare areas previously worn by carts between the 16th tee and 15th green, and also removal of the brick retaining walls around the 1st tee and replacing with a gentle grass batter. The works around the 1st tee will include removal of the steps that currently present a hazard to carts where they project into the paved path.

On the topic of carts, there is still a long way to go with some of the conduct around cart usage. Please be reminded that if you have a cart, it must be registered which includes displaying a sticker. It is not reasonable that most of our members pay their registration, contributing to the facilities and maintenance related to carts, whilst others do not, or make it difficult to monitor by not displaying their registration. I believe it has now become necessary to introduce a zero tolerance policy on this, and carts being used for golf that have no sticker will be directed off the course without a warning (other than the many warnings that have already been given). We are fortunate at DGC that our carts can be driven on the fairway and in the rough, but please park on the path adjacent the greens and tees as these are highly trafficked areas and are quickly degraded by people parking with two or four wheels off the path to the side.

We are now well into the golf season, with many of our most prestigious and major events coming up, and corporate days being staged every Friday. Good luck to everyone competing in the XXXX Gold Team Challenge this weekend and also for the Club Championships in a fortnight.

All the best for the month ahead, I look forward to seeing you around the club.

Darwin Vets: Tales From The Tee Box

Welcome to the first edition of the Darwin Veterans Golf Club monthly contribution to the Darwin Golf Club Newsletter.

For those who don’t know much about the DVGC here is little information about the Club.

The DVGC was formed 25 years ago in 2000, prior to that vets were members of the NTVGA, a few of the founding members are still playing with the DVGC today.

To be a member of the DVGC you need to be over 55 years of age and hold a GA handicap, all new players are welcome to join the Club.

We play 9 holes every Tuesday afternoon and hit off at midday, we currently have around 120 financial members and regularly have over 60 players competing on Tuesday afternoon.

The NT Veterans Championship was recently held in Alice Springs with 11 DVGC members competing, the event was a great success and several Darwin players excelled.

The NT Veterans Gross Champion was John Robins with rounds of 79 and 73 for a total of 152.

Tom Harold, Simon Gardini and Peter Swan were well placed in A Grade while Jack Hughes and Don Jackson were well placed in B Grade.

Upcoming Events: The Roy Harris Memorial Trophy will be played in Katherine on the 11th and 12th of July, more on this event later.

The next working bee will be on Monday 16th June starting at 7:30am (1st hole), if we can get 12 to 15 members to attend and 3 or 4 trailers then hopefully we should be able to complete the back filling of the irrigation trenches.

Good Golfing

Hi Members,

This month has seen the completion of the cart paths on the 16th and from the 1st tee to the fairway which look great.

The course is looking good. The greens have been verti cut and sanded and we are starting to see the benefit of that now.

I would like to than Dave Southwell and the vets for continuing to tidy up the bunkers and remove the stones and the vets for the continual work on the laterals and the bare patches around the course.

Lastly could I ask that all members remember to fill in their divots, repair their pitch marks on the greens and rake the bunkers once you have played out of them. A little bit of etiquette goes a long way and makes the course more enjoyable for everyone.

If you have any questions or concerns about the course, feel free to send me an email and I will respond in due course.

Recent DGC achievers:

Humpty Doo Open was held last weekend and a number of our DGC players competed.

Congratulations to Anna Pescatore who took out Overall Gross and Nett winner of the HD Open. She played two very consistent rounds of 85 off the stick.

Anna won the Captain’s trophy last year for being the female member who lost the most in handicap in one year.  This is her first major tournament win and we feel it will not be her last!  DGC was further represented with Sarah Bierman taking out Runner Up prize!

Congratulations Anna Pescatore

NT Vets Championship  (played in Alice Springs)– John Robins took out the award for 2025

Katherine Open  - Sharon Bierman was Overall Women’s Champion for the second year running!         Sophie Minchinton was runner up.

Mixed Foursomes: 2025 Overall winners – Toni McCormack and Brett Kroger

Nett winners –  Val Ingram & Andrew Joraslafsky

Cart Paths / Roads

We now have a new concrete path running the length of the 16th hole to the Clubhouse. This is considered an Immovable Obstruction and players may take free relief from the concrete path (always bearing in mind to be no nearer the hole).  The same ruling applies at end of 18th Green noting that Out of Bounds markers are beyond concrete path.

Work is currently underway on First Tee area to add small section of path.  (Free relief)

Club Championships occurs over two weekends this month so please consider booking early.  (21-22 and 28-29 June)

Grades will again be decided by Match Committee so that the numbers are proportionate.

Seeded draw to occur final rounds.  A Match play event occurs in August with the top 8 in each grade.  Please indicate upon registering at Pro Shop your availability for this .

Cart usage:  Permitted for Grade B & C

A grade conditions for cart usage:

A player must be 60 years old or older or have a certificate from a GP to drive a cart.

Doctors certificates should be presented to a Match Committee member prior to the start of the first day’s play.

Players who are under 60 years old and do not have a doctors certificate must not ride in or sit in a cart during regulation play.

It is permitted for players authorized to drive carts to carry the clubs of unauthorized players on the cart.

We hope for some record scores in 2025!!
