A Word From The President

Dear Members,

What a great month it has been, it has been great to see so many people enjoying the club on and off the course in the great weather, particularly in the evenings.

Last weekend saw the finals of the Club Matchplay Championship with some very closely fought matches going down to the wire. Matchplay is the ultimate amateur competition format so congratulations to all those that made the finals and in particular to the winners!

We are now only two weeks away from staging the Australian Veterans Golf Union Championships in partnership with Palmerston Golf Club. The ground maintenance team are working hard to have the course as good as possible for this national event, and several planned improvements will also be completed in time for the event and for the benefit of all members. These include the completion of the lighting in the lounge garden area, the arrival of the balance of outdoor furniture, some new fencing around the golf entrance, and renewal of older signage around the clubhouse precinct.

Between our busy schedule of events, course works have continued on the 16th tee, and this month has also seen the installation of a new cart path on the 17th that provides better access to all tee blocks and improves the safety of players from errant balls on the 16th. The sand bins, ball washer and tee signage will be relocated, and all efforts made to establish the area as best possible for the Veterans Championships. Following that event the balance of earthworks, including mounding and rehabilitation of the old cart path alignment will be completed.

Sunday 17th saw ‘Babes and Beverages’ held on the practice range with drinks and nibbles in the garden lounge area afterwards. The event, aimed at providing ladies with a fun and social pathway into golf, was a great success, some of the ladies signing up for training clinics on the spot, and all of them very keen on participating in the Women on Wednesday. Bec West, who is leading the program has done a great job on bringing it to fruition and I can certainly see it leading to greater participation in competitions and an increase in our membership for women.

Best of luck to all those playing in the upcoming Veterans Championships, don’t forget the PGA tournament at Palmerston in two weeks if you want to see some great golf, and I look forward to seeing you around the club.

Hi Members,

This month has seen the NT Classic and the Darwin Open played with the course in excellent condition. I would like to thank Tod and the PT team for the way the course was presented and how it played.

The PT team are continuing to fine tune the irrigation system which is a work in progress and are finishing off the lightening rod installations prior to the wet season.

Thanks to Dave Southwell and his helpers who have finished removing the stones from the bunkers.

You will notice that we are continuing to make improvements around the course with the removal of the brick on the RHS of the first tee and the RHS of the 16th tee and the new cart path at the 17th tee. There has also been some earth works around the 16th tee to improve the drainage prior to the wet season.

Lastly could I ask that all members remember to fill in their divots, repair their pitch marks on the greens and rake the bunkers once you have played out of them. A little bit of etiquette goes a long way and makes the course more enjoyable for everyone.

If you have any questions or concerns about the course, feel free to send me an email and I will respond in due course.

Happy golfing,

Simon Rogers

Fog on morning of Day 1 only added to the complexity. Scot Cheesman was pleasantly surprised to find that he had managed an Eagle on the 10th from 170m out despite being unable to see the shot.

Another gem of an anecdote which was a bit different… when Belinda, our Marketing Manager, was seeking out the winner to get a photo scoop we had to ask Fuyu’s mother of her whereabouts “She’s in the playground” was the response. Of course, there she was on the equipment watching a download of Happy Gilmore 2 on her device. That is the norm for 13 yr olds who have just won a Gold Letter event!

LOCAL RULES UPDATE

‘Yes’! we hear you say….the O/B markers have been moved on the 9th!

Admittedly it is a small move – but a move. Players will still have to be mindful of that left hook!

Match Committee has moved the Out of Bounds markers approx 1- 2m closer to the road edge on LH side of 9th. The road verge is poorly defined and cannot be used as O/B boundary; not until it becomes concrete path 100m from the Green, where white painted lines indicate Out of Bounds. Note if any part of your ball is on the course, it is considered IN. (Your entire ball must be past the line for it to be O/B)

**Please note that to determine if your ball is out of bounds in the section with the poles you are looking at the ‘course side line at ground level’ of these poles. It is a straight line between each of these poles, and does not go to the road and then back out to a pole.

Impediments still remain such as the coffee rock (no relief) and temporary water may lie in ditch by the road (free relief from abnormal course condition Rule 16.1)

GOLF AUSTRALIA CHANGES

Heads up from G.A. re changes coming to the technology used to enhance your golf experience.

Golf Australia is undertaking a major digital transformation that includes the transition away from the 25-year-old GOLF Link platform to a new system called Golf Australia CONNECT.

Thisnew platform will provide enhanced technology services to more than 1,900 golf clubs across Australia.

For golfers, there will be two key changes coming from October 2 later this year.

A new Official Golf Australia App will replace the existing GA Handicap App. This app will retain the existing handicap lookup feature and introduce a range of exciting new tools.

Secondly, there will be a new portal to access your GA Handicap. This will be done via Golf Australia and the PGA of Australia’s new website, GOLF.com.au which goes live on October 2.

Prior to the October 2 transition, the only thing you need to do is check your existing golf.org.au account details are up to date.

If you don't already have an online account, and you wish to view your handicap history online or use the new GA App following the transition, you will need to create an account at golf.org.au.

From October 2, golf.org.au will automatically redirect to the new GOLF.com.au website.

In order to undertake the transition effectively, Golf Australia has advised all clubs and venues there will be an offline period from the evening of September 28 through to October 2. During this short period, rounds of golf played will not be able to be handicapped.

While some clubs will regain access to the new platform from October 2, up to two weeks will be required for clubs affiliated with MiClub to fully integrate and provide clubs with handicap functions.

Match Committee will keep you updated nearer the transition.

See you on the course….

Michele Cody, Women’s Captain

Leighton Schultz, Men’s Captain
