A Word From The President

Dear Members,

Finally dry season would appear to be upon us!

Whilst the greenkeeping team still have some hard work ahead to overcome the lengthy wet period, the course is certainly looking and playing its best for many months. Members should rest assured that this will not reduce the focus on making the course the best it can be every day, and for the many major golf events we have on our calendar this year. Simon Rogers continues to work closely with the maintenance team and their program for the course, with a key objective in the medium term of heading into the next wet season with greens in a much healthier position than the previous two years.

Talking about upcoming events, in September we will host the Australian Veteran Golfers Union (AVGU) National Championship in partnership with Palmerston Golf Club. Our own Darwin Veterans Golfers Club are charged with organizing the event and I encourage any member over 55 who isn't a member to consider joining the DVGC and representing the Club and the N.T.

In other Veteran news, the Vet's AGM was held last month, and John Baylis was awarded Life Membership of the DVGC for his nearly 20 year contribution as Vice Captain, Captain and current President. He is also President of the Northern Territory Veterans Golf Association, please join me in congratulating him on this prestigious acknowledgement.

I am pleased to advise that a full review of our constitution and disciplinary process has now been conducted to bring these documents up to date, and a draft is currently being assembled for the Board's review prior to presentation to Members.

I am equally excited to announce that the Club is proud to have now been acknowledged for our work in diversifying the involvement of the broader community in our great game and across the club's activities, particularly with women and girls. As such we have been accepted as a signatory to the world headquarters of Golf, the Royal and Ancient Club St Andrew's Women in Golf Charter. The Women in Golf Charter was launched by the R&A in 2018 to foster a more inclusive culture within golf around the world, and to enable more women and girls to flourish and maximise their potential at all levels of the sport. This has only been possible through the hard work and persistence of too many people to mention individually but includes Board members and our pro shop and teaching team.

Golf cart usage and behavior is currently a big issue around the Club and course. We have had many members approach or send emails and photos regarding behavior outside the policy for cart usage, particularly with regard to driving too close to greens, not using cart paths, parking on tee blocks, not displaying cart registration stickers and the cart not being registered at all. To ensure everybody is aware of the policy around carts, there will be a separate bulletin to ensure all members are familiar with the current Cart Usage Policy and you will see a heightened focus on monitoring carts on the course and checking carts for registration. When appropriate, sanctions may be placed on the use of either club owned or private carts. The Cart Usage Policy is in place specifically to guard against damage to the course and Club assets (including hire carts), so it is in the interests of all members that carts are used appropriately.

On a final and sad note, we lost another long-term member last week with the passing of Bobbie Johnstone. Whilst I didn't personally know Bobbie, she no longer played but remained a full member and continued to participate in the Club's social and presentation activities with our women's golf section. Our Women's Captain, Michele Cody has provided a great tribute to Bobbie that will appear in an upcoming bulletin.

All the best for the month ahead, I look forward to seeing you around the club.

Best wishes,

Simon Gardini

General Manager Report

As we approach the end of another membership year at our wonderful Club, it is time to once again consider membership renewal fees for the coming 2025/2026 season. Consistent with our past year, there will be an increase into all membership categories, excluding juniors, to address inflation.

We will once again run an 'Early Bird' competition for those that renew their membership prior to the 30th of June, 2025. Simply pay your fees prior to this date and you will go into a draw to win a Titleist golf bag valued at $445.

Keep an eye on your emails over the next couple of weeks for your membership renewals.

A hugely successful Easter Egg Hunt was held at the club on the 20th of April, with approximately 150 people attending. Plenty of smiles on kids faces as they hunted down their choccy eggs, even some parents couldn't resist joining in. The petting zoo and face painting were a big hit as well. A big thankyou goes out to Matt Adamson who played the role of Easter Bunny perfectly, despite the hot weather and cool vest failing he persevered. Stay tuned for details about our next event 'Welcome to the Dry Family Fun Day'.

Our kitchen team have been working very hard to develop a new menu and this is being finalised with a release date very close.

With our golfing season underway I'd like to extend a big thank you to Greg, Wade, Kurt, Bec, and the entire Pro Shop team for being such a vital part of the golfing community at Darwin Golf Club. Your dedication, friendliness, and support make the experience at the club truly special.

Please make sure you are regularly checking in with our social media on Facebook or Instagram to keep up to date with all the latest news, specials and events happening at the club.

Best wishes and happy golfing

Brett Lubicz

Hi Members,

This month has seen the course dry out which has allowed Tod and his team to get on top of things and it is starting to look good. The greens have recovered well from the coring and have since been verti-cut which we should see the benefit from in the coming weeks.

The Vet's have recommenced the top dressing of the irrigation laterals and Dave Southwell, Tom Harold and Brett Kroeger have started to clean up the bunkers to remove the stones and sand the faces and I would like to thank them for volunteering their time.

The sand bins on the practice fairway are being used and the only complaints I have received is that the sand bins are empty, and people are unable to fill their divots. As the trial has been successful, we are looking to purchase additional sand bins for the range.

Construction of the cart path from the 16th tee to the clubhouse will commence this week. The work will be carried out to cause minimum disruption to your golf, but could I ask all members to be mindful of the workers completing this work.

Unfortunately, there was some damage done to the 3rd/7th green on Sunday night by golf carts. If anyone has any information regarding this, could you please let me, or Brett Lubicz (GM) know.

Lastly, I would like to ask all members to remember to fill your divots on the course and repair your pitch marks on the greens.

If you have any questions or concerns about the course, feel free to send me an email and I will respond in due course.

Happy golfing,

Simon Rogers

Competition golf in May kicked off with the Great Northern Super Crisp Open. An average of 175 players competed daily and despite the gusty conditions many achieved scores in the high 30s and early 40s. It was good to see a few visiting members from nearby clubs enjoy our course and our C Grade overall winner took time out to visit from Brisbane (Virginia GC) and play some standout golf with his Darwin mates. His best two rounds score of 88 was a near record for the event. He lost 5 strokes off his handicap for his creditable effort!

Men's A Grade 1st - Sam Greygoose (78), 2nd Morgan Yeo (75 C/B), 3rd Zane Ryan (75)

Men's B Grade 1st - Bill Bracken (76), 2nd Joshua Farrow (74C/B), 3rd Ronald Dunn (74)

Men's C Grade 1st - Sean Chung (88), 2nd Max Ranie (79), 3rd Boyd Witzerman(76)

Women's A Division 1st - Michelle Trawinski (74 C/B), 2nd Sharon Bierman (74)

Womens B Division 1st - Aneliese Sanger (75 C/B) 2nd Nerissa Calkin (75)

The long weekend included the final of our inaugural 4BBB Matchplay. It was a wily affair with the four finalists noted for their competitive spirit and 'ice in veins' approach to matchplay!

Syd and Buttons Pickering defeated Rex Wild and Roger Newman in a tight , but fun, battle.

Our thanks to the sponsors: Kylie & Simon Chaplin, Rex Wild & Tom Harold.

Match Committee noted the positive uptake of this internal event and will likely include it in next year's program. There may be opportunity to open it up to more than 16 teams in 2026.

Our second Monthly Medal occurs this week. Remember that we hold 6 of these stroke events and the winners qualify to play in the Medal of Medals event in September. Monthly winners receive $100 and a DGC ball marker as a bonus prize so that you have a longer term memento of the win!

Upcoming Events

Sunday, 18 May: Kerri Crowley Memorial 4BBB. This is the annual Crowley sponsored event to honour the memory of Kerri and acknowledge the importance of family. It is promoted as an intergenerational event. Husband / wife teams are ineligible. However, parent / child, aunt / nephew etc meets the criteria. The Proshop will allocate a player handicap of 27 (men) 36 (women) if an individual does not have an AGU handicap. The event is meant to encourage new players to try the game with the family.

It is unfortunate that many may not be able to participate this year due to travelling to the Katherine Open which is being held on the same weekend. So if you are in town that Sunday, grab a relative and join the fixture!

24-25 May : Mixed Foursomes (alias 'divorcesomes') it is that time of the year when we need to find a partner for our mixed foursomes event. Some of our recent winners have left town, so that makes way for some new contenders' names on the trophy. Please contact the Captains if you need assistance to find a playing partner of the opposite gender. (Numbers may also be impacted for this event, as it clashes with the NT Amateur in Alice Springs)

Pace of Play

Match Committee and the Proshop receive regular comments from frustrated players re pace of play. In our first Broadcast of the year we outlined some basic Golf Australia protocols that help keep the game moving and enjoyable for every player.

· Be at the tee area 5 minutes before your tee-time

· Allow the 'shorter hitters' in the group to tee off first when it is safe to do so

· Play 'Ready Golf' (Match play is the exception)

· Watch ALL shots in your group, but locate your own ball before searching for other player's balls.

· Play a provisional ball if your ball may be lost or OB (particularly if in rough)

· Do limit practice swings to one, and keep pre-shot routines to a minimum

· Study the line, slope, grain of your putt whilst others putt out

· Proceed to the next tee and tee off whilst your partners are still putting out if your group is falling behind i.e. hole in front clear

· Try to mark the score as you walk /drive to or at the next tee while others tee off

· Maintain constant awareness of the group in front of you - NOT the group behind you.

Please respect the fixture order and do not cut in at the crossover after nine holes. The Proshop monitors the hire carts placement on course and can ascertain time taken when playing. They may marshall a group during a round if there is a significant delay occurring i.e. full hole free in front.

Please be respectful of others on the course and refrain from hitting up on them. You know the estimated distance that you can hit. That is what necessitates our Scratch players having to wait on the tee for a little longer than some. Safety must be a consideration.

Basic R&A Rules of Golf workshop is being held Thursday 8 May at 6:00pm on the Putting Green if anyone wishes a refresher. Amy Griesbach our local Rules official can demonstrate the Dos and Don'ts of taking relief and other such instances to remember.

See you on course! Enjoy that Dry Season run.......
