Competition golf in May kicked off with the Great Northern Super Crisp Open. An average of 175 players competed daily and despite the gusty conditions many achieved scores in the high 30s and early 40s. It was good to see a few visiting members from nearby clubs enjoy our course and our C Grade overall winner took time out to visit from Brisbane (Virginia GC) and play some standout golf with his Darwin mates. His best two rounds score of 88 was a near record for the event. He lost 5 strokes off his handicap for his creditable effort!

The long weekend included the final of our inaugural 4BBB Matchplay. It was a wily affair with the four finalists noted for their competitive spirit and 'ice in veins' approach to matchplay!
Syd and Buttons Pickering defeated Rex Wild and Roger Newman in a tight , but fun, battle.
Our thanks to the sponsors: Kylie & Simon Chaplin, Rex Wild & Tom Harold.
Match Committee noted the positive uptake of this internal event and will likely include it in next year's program. There may be opportunity to open it up to more than 16 teams in 2026.
Our second Monthly Medal occurs this week. Remember that we hold 6 of these stroke events and the winners qualify to play in the Medal of Medals event in September. Monthly winners receive $100 and a DGC ball marker as a bonus prize so that you have a longer term memento of the win!
Upcoming Events
Sunday, 18 May: Kerri Crowley Memorial 4BBB. This is the annual Crowley sponsored event to honour the memory of Kerri and acknowledge the importance of family. It is promoted as an intergenerational event. Husband / wife teams are ineligible. However, parent / child, aunt / nephew etc meets the criteria. The Proshop will allocate a player handicap of 27 (men) 36 (women) if an individual does not have an AGU handicap. The event is meant to encourage new players to try the game with the family.
It is unfortunate that many may not be able to participate this year due to travelling to the Katherine Open which is being held on the same weekend. So if you are in town that Sunday, grab a relative and join the fixture!
24-25 May : Mixed Foursomes (alias 'divorcesomes') it is that time of the year when we need to find a partner for our mixed foursomes event. Some of our recent winners have left town, so that makes way for some new contenders' names on the trophy. Please contact the Captains if you need assistance to find a playing partner of the opposite gender. (Numbers may also be impacted for this event, as it clashes with the NT Amateur in Alice Springs)
Pace of Play
Match Committee and the Proshop receive regular comments from frustrated players re pace of play. In our first Broadcast of the year we outlined some basic Golf Australia protocols that help keep the game moving and enjoyable for every player.
· Be at the tee area 5 minutes before your tee-time
· Allow the 'shorter hitters' in the group to tee off first when it is safe to do so
· Play 'Ready Golf' (Match play is the exception)
· Watch ALL shots in your group, but locate your own ball before searching for other player's balls.
· Play a provisional ball if your ball may be lost or OB (particularly if in rough)
· Do limit practice swings to one, and keep pre-shot routines to a minimum
· Study the line, slope, grain of your putt whilst others putt out
· Proceed to the next tee and tee off whilst your partners are still putting out if your group is falling behind i.e. hole in front clear
· Try to mark the score as you walk /drive to or at the next tee while others tee off
· Maintain constant awareness of the group in front of you - NOT the group behind you.
Please respect the fixture order and do not cut in at the crossover after nine holes. The Proshop monitors the hire carts placement on course and can ascertain time taken when playing. They may marshall a group during a round if there is a significant delay occurring i.e. full hole free in front.
Please be respectful of others on the course and refrain from hitting up on them. You know the estimated distance that you can hit. That is what necessitates our Scratch players having to wait on the tee for a little longer than some. Safety must be a consideration.
Basic R&A Rules of Golf workshop is being held Thursday 8 May at 6:00pm on the Putting Green if anyone wishes a refresher. Amy Griesbach our local Rules official can demonstrate the Dos and Don'ts of taking relief and other such instances to remember.
See you on course! Enjoy that Dry Season run.......
